Our statement on the removal of plaques accompanying "The President’s House: Freedom and Slavery in the Making of a New Nation" exhibit

The NAACP Bucks County Branch—proudly representing one of Philadelphia’s surrounding suburban counties—stands in outrage and in full solidarity with the Philadelphia NAACP Branch.
What happens in Philadelphia matters to Bucks County. Our histories are intertwined. Our communities are connected. And attempts to erase truth in the city where this nation was shaped reverberate far beyond its borders.
We strongly condemn the removal of the Slavery Exhibit from the President’s House. This action represents a blatant attempt to whitewash our nation’s history and erase the truth about President George Washington’s Philadelphia residence—and the enslaved people who lived, labored, and suffered there.
As the NAACP Philadelphia Branch has stated, removing this exhibit denies our entire region—urban and suburban alike—the opportunity to engage honestly with the full and unvarnished narrative of our past. History is not only what we celebrate; it is also what we must confront.
Erasing the realities of slavery does not foster unity or understanding. Truth does.
Bucks County stands with Philadelphia in calling for the preservation and restoration of comprehensive, truthful history—history that honors the lives and legacies of those who were enslaved and acknowledges the injustices that continue to shape our society today.
- We stand together—city and suburb.
-We condemn this action.
-We demand truth, accountability, and remembrance.
